I have a 4.5 year old female cat that has never lived with another pet. A few months ago, I took in a 1 year old male cat from a relative. I set up the new cat in a spare bedroom with his own food, litter, water, bed, and toys. Both cats were very interested in each other through the door. I slowly started having them have more contact with each other over the next week or so, putting food on either side of the door and slowly introducing them to each other.
As I started letting the new cat be out in the house more, there was some hissing and occasional fighting, but I hoped it would get better. It has only gotten worse, to the point where now the I have to make the new cat spend most of his time in his room again, because the fighting is nearly constant. The older cat is now always on high alert if the younger cat is around and makes it clear to the younger one. The young cat, for his part, doesn't care and just does whatever he wants, including getting into the older cat's space.
Does anyone have any insight?
