Introducing an 11 Y/O Cat to Our 4 Y/O Pitbull Rescue

A woman near me had recently lost her mother, so she was wanting to give away her mother's cat since she has many dogs that will chase it. Last night, we came and picked her up to bring her home with us.

Our pitbull mix, Tanner, is a rescue. We don't know if he was abused or anything. All we know is he was a stray all his life until hit by a car in SC, both back legs broken. He is healed now and has done excellent in training, given the circumstances of his life. He is a very sweet and loving dog. He forgets he is so big and will try to lay on anybody's lap if given the chance. He loves to play/meet other dogs if they aren't scared of him. He doesn't chase squirrels, birds, really anything (not even to play fetch). He will though, chase me in the backyard if I run, so he does have some playfulness/prey driven instinct. He (from my knowledge) has only seen one cat before. It puffed up out of anticipation. He sniffed at it but didn't persist and seemed bored after he realized it didn't want to play with him.

Our new feline friend, Lacy, is a love bug that just wants to live out her golden years in peace. We introduced them last night (with supervision, just to make sure that it would be a doable living situation). Tanner immediately was interested and walked right up to her. She puffed up in response, backed up but didn't swat or hiss. She turned away and he tried to follow her, in which she turned around (I thought to warn him) but she moved close to him and touched her nose to his, sniffing him for a brief moment. His tail was wagging the entire time and hers was as well.

After this, they seemed fine with eachother but now when she sees him nearby, she will swish her tail (agitated I believe) and meow lowly. She has only hissed twice at him (he was being nosey) but mostly will only meow long and deeply to him I assume as warning. She hasn't tried to swat him at all though.

I just want some more tips to help keep the cat not so stressed and our dog from getting hurt if he gets to close/plays with her and she swats out of fear.
