Is it a bad idea to get a kitten as my first pet if I'm looking for companionship?

I've grown up with cats during my childhood and college years, but am now living alone and looking for my first cat. Although I will absolutely play with my cat, I am primarily looking for a lap cat; one that will give me good company when I do things like read a book and lie down in bed, as well as let me pet it and potentially pick it up.

I see a lot of great looking kittens, but I am concerned that I will not know if it has the desired traits I mentioned until much later in its life. Is this a valid concern, or can I seek companionship the same way with a new kitten?
