My co-worker found around a really sweet puppy on the side of the road the other day and it broke me to think that they'd have to go through being in a shelter and the adoption process- especially since I live in Georgia and a lot of the shelters here are kill-shelters. So, I kept it. I brought them home yesterday and ever since, my cats (I have two) have pretty much kept away and hid under furniture. The dog has had brief interactions with them, a few to which she's chased both of the cats (probably out of curiosity).
Just recently she got into this staring contest of sorts with one of the more dominant cats and she laid down- which I assume is a good sign? She also got close enough to sniff one of them before the cat hissed and scared the dog. My cat's have been around dogs before and generally have done alright.
I'm just really worried. I don't want the dog to hurt my cats, nor for my cats to hurt the dog. Any guidance on what to do would really be appreciated.
