Keeping cat off countertops and out of sink, please help!

Hoping someone out there has a secret they can share. I feel like I have tried everything.

First issue, My cat loves the countertops. I clean them religiously. They are spotless and there is nothing of interest up there. Secondly, he loves the sink. It is also completely spotless, no odor or smells. I have been deep cleaning after EVERY meal. He loves just being in there.

I do cook a lot, I do not like having a cat on countertops for this reason. Too much bacteria transfer. So I would love to train him to not go up there. Also for his sake, I don’t want him eating whatever out of the sink if I leave something.

Things I have tried: Aluminum foil - no affect Diffuser with citronella oil - doesn’t care Deterrent sprays - doesn’t care Water spray - he doesn’t care (I know this one isn’t effective anyway) He has alternate climbing posts + stools.

I calmly place him on the ground often. I am not violent or angry about it. I just want to teach him this isn’t a hangout spot.

Do I just accept I have a counter surfer?

Also for reference, I have lived with other cats and none of them had this habit. They knew counters were off limits successfully.

Any advice or tips are welcome!
