Locking a cat in a small room

We recently got a kitten (3-4 months old) and we have set up his own room in our small laundry room (about 12 by 6 feet). We set up cat food, litter and a bed along with all the toys.

So we are not really sure what to do with him at night when we all go to sleep upstairs. We felt like it would be unsafe to leave him out by himself downstairs at night especially because he doesn’t sleep when we all go to bed. So far we lock him inside his room before going to bed and let him out in the morning. All this time I thought he probably just sleeps in there, but last night around 3-4 am I went downstairs to get water and decided to check up on him and saw him just sitting there wide awake on his bed and as soon as I opened the door he came out.

Does he feel trapped inside the room ? Is what we are doing too cruel or bad for him? If he doesn’t sleep during the time we sleep what are we supposed to do ? We also lock him in there sometimes during the day just to let him used to knowing that it his own room. I don’t want him to feel trapped but just let him have his own place at night so he’s safe.
