A week ago we adopted a street rescue cat from Abu Dhabi. He’d had an incredibly traumatising 24 hours travelling from there to London, and spent the first night hiding under our bed and crying. The second and third nights were exactly the same, and during the daytime he’d hide away from us and meow fearfully if we came into the room.
By the fourth night we had let him explore the living room and kitchen areas, and had installed a cat pheromone diffuser to try and help him relax. He seemed to be growing in confidence, but still would flinch away if we tried to put a hand out to pet him. He was never physically aggressive mind, just really nervous.
Last night we had a breakthrough. Me and my husband had been watching TV all evening, leaving our cat to get up to what cats do best. As I got up from the sofa, about to head to bed, he came and jumped up in my space next to my husband. Amazed, I gave him a treat for being a very good and brave boy (which he ate in front of us - another breakthrough!). I then sat down very carefully on the edge of the sofa and put my hand out towards him. He moved away slightly, but when I started gently tickling his ears and chin I could feel him relax and he started to purr!
I feel so so happy, after a week of worrying about my very frightened little boy he is finally starting to settle in. His whole world was changed, but he is in his forever home now, and I couldn’t be prouder of him.
