should I rehome my cat? ****lengthy explanation****

Yes, I feel guilty even posting this. We got two brothers at 4 months old two years ago. Just over a year ago one of them never came back home and has been missing since. Thor (the cat who remained, was never cuddly but now became completely affectionate. always cuddling or on a lap). Then, we got a puppy. Thor stayed upstairs and the dog was downstairs, and Thor hated the dog. We said if they didn't get used to each other wed rehome the dog (LIARS. We couldn't, he's so attached to us). ANYWAYS after 8 months they finally got used to each others presence. The dog still chases the cat once in a while but then co-exist. I have noticed the cat is much less affectionate though, he likes to sleep and go outside, maybe get a few minutes of pets a day and hes very picky. I feel bad as before he was so affectionate as the only pet, and was extremely playful and loving with his brother and all other cats (always playing with neighbourhood cats).

This gets me to thinking, would he be happier in a house as the only animal or just with another cat? My dog takes up, more like demands, all my attention. After Thor had a minor surgery and I tried to sleep with him, the dog would have a panic attack scratching at the bedroom door crying. He's on top of me as I write this. I feel bad that the cat doesn't have the same quality of life as before, though I know he's not depressed and will still play in the house and outside, I just wonder if he would be happier and more free somewhere else.
