My son (preteen) has a very empathetic connection with animals. I think it’s wonderful - but it’s to the point where he at times cries or gets very upset when I pick up our cat.
He says that they don’t like being held and it takes an emotional toll.
Now, I tend to feel like an asshole when I try to tell him that’s it’s fine and we’re not hurting the cat. I feel like one of the greatest things of having a cat is to cuddle, snuggle, and rub your face all over them.
I want to help him understand that it is fine. Though, I don’t have any good reasoning as picking up our cat does seem to be purely self-gratifying.
Is he right and I need to reframe my thinking on this or is there a good way of explaining this?
( I wanted to get the viewpoint of animal lovers and that’s why I didn’t post this on a parenting sub).
