Should I be worried when moving time comes and I have to separate my cat and my roommate's cat?

I live with a roommate that has his own cat, Trigger. Trigger is a lovely, friendly, and playful fella, and would benefit having a playmate around. I absolutely love the spunky guy and I feel like a second owner to him. I really want a cat of my own right now. I've had cats all my life, I know all the ins and outs, but I've never "owned" a cat for myself, even though I've taken care of my mom's all my life.

However, something just occured to me. If Trigger and my future cat bond together, what's going to happen when we move? Will Trigger and my cat be depressed for a long time, potentially forever? Or will they get used to it after a month or so? I don't want to hurt anyone. I'm not planning on moving anytime soon, but I want to plan for the future. I almost desperately want a cat of my own right now, but I won't get one if it means the two of them becoming sad
