Switching to wood pellets for cat litter?

Right now I currently use yesterday's news cat litter. I use the unscented kind that comes in the purple bag. It's $20.99 CAD before tax for a 26 lb bag and it usually lasts me like a month (one cat/one box). I have heard of people buying wood pellets from Canadian Tire or such for cheaper and it's just as good.

For example, there's this:

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/softwood-pellets-40-lb-0642778p.0642778.html?ds_rl=1283573&ds_rl=1283573&gclid=Cj0KCQiA7YyCBhD_ARIsALkj54q3J99y7XBy6volZ1pz9oFAEtPbhBe7OGp-OQ8MaN9iz2NCaYgbJkMaAqOQEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#store=241

It's "softwood" (no mention of the wood), 40 lb bag for $7.

Can I buy this instead? Is there a type of wood I should avoid? How do I shop for wood pellets? I don't want to buy one with added chemicals that can hurt my baby. I also have tarantulas sitting not too far from the cat box so I'm a bit concerned about wood types.

I'm all out of cat litter as we speak so it's either I go out to buy wood pellets today or get the newspaper pellets like usual.
