Hey r/Pets. I have an 8 year old lab/pit mix. He's a huge sweetheart when you get to know him and very friendly. He tends to intimidate strangers though because he's pretty big and whenever he barks it's extremely deep & loud.
We just moved into a new apartment and apparently there's a local gang of cats that like to terrorize the block. From what I can tell they are strays. They typically roam from one yard to the next. Occasionally they'll be on the front porches instead. I'm pretty sure various people on the block leave food out for them, which would explain why they keep coming back and what they're meowing about. And when I say meowing I mean for hours. Every. Single. Night. There was also one week where one of the cats was possibly in heat?? I don't know much about cats, but the screeching noises it would make outside my window were horrifying.
My dog has never really been around cats before, so on the rare occasion he sees one he gets excited and immediately wants to chase it. So the problem now is that these cats will not shut up, and every time he hears them he starts to bark and whine at the window. This happens well into the night, like past 4am. It's extremely disruptive for me personally, not to mention how inconsiderate and rude it must be towards my neighbors. I honestly have no idea what to do.
TLDR; The local cats are bullying my dog by meowing nonstop. My dog is bullying me by barking all night in response.
