So I already had a 5yo cat and just recently got a puppy and it has been a month now and they are not seeming to adjust to each other any more than they did day one. The puppy is always wanting to play with the cat but he just isn't interested. I have a finished basement where the cat's litter box and food dishes are kept but he has full roam of the house. I have a divider at the basement stairs that blocks the puppy from going down but the cat can still move freely so that he has a safe space where he can go to not be bothered if he chooses. But every time they are in the same room the puppy attempts to entice the cat to play and the cat just hisses and swipes at her. I realize that they may never be best friends and that's fine. I also realize that the cat may never decide to play with the puppy and that is also fine. What I am looking for though is suggestions on what more I can do to facilitate peace between them and help the cat to not feel stressed and on edge in his own home. Any ideas?
