Hi there. A few weeks ago I adopted a cat that the shelter said had petting induced aggression. I was totally ok with this as they told me to just disassociate, let him pet me, recognize the signs of him wanting no more, etc.
Over the last couple days though, his aggression has become substantially worse. He constantly attacks me despite me trying to distract him with other toys. I have tried to ignore him, I have tried hissing/firm NO or STOP, I have tried putting a blanket on top of him to get him to stop biting my arms and ankles, but to no avail.
I feel horribly because it’s really straining on me to care for him. He is cuddly and playful and will some nights sleep in between my legs but some times, and it’s often brought on from playfulness, he will just freak out. I’m actually currently sleeping in my living room because he’s locked with food and a litter box in my bedroom.
Is this normal at all? Can this be trained away? I just worry because it seems to be getting worse and worse every day. What else can I do to calm him down during these episodes? I’ve dreamed of having a cat for so long and I love my boy and I want to be able to help him and have a happy life with him, just not sure how to curb this extreme aggression. I planned on taking him to the vet on Friday, but he was just examined a couple weeks ago at the shelter so I feel like that might just be a waste of time.
