I've adopted a cat soon after I moved in a new flat. This flat is extremely noisy. The building, the neighbours, traffic outside, my fridge, my cat's water fountain... there is constant loud and irregular noise.
I knew it was a noisy place. I worried about it for myself, and I hesitated adopting the cat because of it. I talked about it to the vet and to the people at the shelter who all said it would be fine, that the cat would adapt. But they don't live here, they don't know how it is.
A few months later, this noise is driving me crazy. It keeps me from sleeping. I've got headaches. I'm constantly stimulated by the noise. But I have the luxury of wearing earplugs and of going out. My friends have offered me to sleep at their place every so often to escape the noise.
Cats are difficult to read. I don't know how he reacts to this noise, if it stresses him out as much as it stresses me or if he's fine with it. I'm worried because as a cat his earing is better than mine, and if this sound is painful to me, what could it be for him?
Do you know how to know if noise stresses my cat out? Do you have tips to protect him from this noise?
Thank you.
(I'm looking at other flats to move to a quieter place but it seems I cannot afford the rent of a quiet flat in my area).
