I'm currently house/pet sitting for a family friend, watching their two cats. One is a lovely, social kitty. The other... well, not so much. The second cat is reclusive, and when she does show her face she is giving me all the signs of an aggressive/fearful cat. Hard stares, ears flattened sideways, hissing, etc.
I've been around cats enough to recognize these signs, but not enough to know how to effectively deal with it. The big problem is that she won't yield space or run away from me, which is an issue because this house has a lot of tight hallways and staircases that I need to access to feed them, change litter, and so on. So if I need to get upstairs and she is at the top of the staircase, she won't let me up without a fight.
I had to use a spray bottle today to get past her, and received another recommendation to shake a jar with coins in it at the cat to scare it off. The spray bottle worked, but I feel like both methods are going to reinforce whatever negative behaviors I'm getting. I also don't want to make the cat miserable while I'm here if I can help it.
Thoughts or advice?
