We adopted a cat found outdoors roughly 2.5 years ago. At the time the vets estimated she was 6-8 months old and born in the wild. We had her spayed shortly after adopting her and she is now solely an indoor cat.
She is a great cat, has TONS of energy, still loves to climb, explore and play.
She does have some anxiety issues, some of which were resolved by getting an automatic feeder. Some are still there, generally right before she has to use the litter she sprints around for a couple minutes and seems stressed out. She also pees every single time she goes on a car ride, but we've attributed that to anxiety. She really panics in cars. We've tried comforting sprays, they haven't helped at all.
The main issue is that every Fall and Spring, she regularly pees on our bed. At first we thought she was taking her revenge on my wife, since she had left on an internship for over two months and the cat may have felt separation anxiety. Then we got the impression it happened generally if we left the apartment for longer than usual (again revenge/anxiety).
But now we have a new suspicion. One morning after she peed we opened the window to air out the smell and found that there was a strong smell of cat pee right outside the window. We live in a basement apartment so the window is basically and ground level.
We got her bladder checked and nothing problematic was found, vet suggested putting her on urinary control food which we did but this hasnt changed much.
We need input on: *How likely this could be the cause of the behavior. *How to prevent cats from peeing near our window, if at all possible *Any other ways to make our cat more at ease, without blocking off the room. The apartment is not huge and we don't want to close it off completely since she loves to explore.
TLDR Cat pees on bed. We live in a basement apartment. Suspect there is a cat peeing outside our bedroom window which is making our cat stressed out and feel the need to mark her territory. How to best address the situation?
