Cat’s long health decline, then brief period of improvement, then death

I recently had to put down my cat that I had since 2013. She was a Himalayan and she was about 10 years old. Her health had been declining for a year or so. She was losing weight and muscle and getting weaker and weaker. She had diarrhea. She wasn’t grooming herself and was having trouble holding herself up in the litter box and so was prone to infection. Due to her breed, she had breathing problems and problems with her gums and teeth. But then, seemingly out of nowhere, she seemed to improve. For a couple of weeks or so, she was more energetic and getting around much more easily and she no longer had diarrhea. Then, a few days after that, I came home from work one day and found her lying on her side and barely responsive or conscious. I took her to a vet clinic. When she started gasping as though she couldn’t breathe, we decided it was time to put her to sleep. Has anybody else seen this sequence in pets of a health decline, brief period of improvement, and then death soon after? What could make this brief period of improvement happen?
