whoops this got way too detailed, way too fast. i put a tldr at the bottom, cookies to anyone who actually reads this whole thing hah :)
a little backstory on my cat:
she’s a shelter kitty i got about 2.5 years ago. we adopted her from our local Bidewee, and they have on record that she was already a year old at intake, having been rescued as a stray in the NYC area (i believe), so no one really knows what might have occurred in her early youth to perhaps make her the skittish girl i’ve come to know. the shelter she was in was very well attended to- clean, with at least 4 litter boxes, plenty of cat trees/ledges/toys, and no shortage of human affection, however there were at least 10 cats in an estimated 50ftx35ft room with a semi open dividing wall and since i’ve known her she has at best tolerated other animals, and seldom plays with my 2 year old german shepherd, but is no longer scared of her either.
since bringing her home she has no doubt warmed up Tremendously to household noises both from people and human activity (ie. footsteps/walking, pots/cooking, doors opening/closing, etc), and over the years she has made great strides with being comfortable around the members of my household (i’m 18F living at home with my mom, 2 brothers, and 1 sister) as well as accepting our now grown dog who was introduced to her as a pup. to give an idea of her progress, she went from hiding in concealment in the back room on the mid level of our house where she’s first been introduced all the time and only venturing out in the dead of night, to roaming about the house despite its many occupants/lounging about on furniture on all Three levels of the house at all times of day and night, and accepting pets from at least 3/5 of us (i’m her favorite, we bonded right off the bat as she was what i wanted for my “sweet sixteen” in lieu of a big party, which is to say i feed/clean litter/attend to her) and yet Without Fail, the two sounds that guarantee her bolting from your presence and sight are Coughing and especially (!) Sneezing. don’t get me wrong, i’m not so uptight as that i’m genuinely or medically worried about this, i’m mainly just curious as to why this specific sound seems to panic her. just now she was curled up in my lap, in utter kitty bliss as i rubbed her face, she jumped up and ran from the room as a result of my mild sneeze! like i said, not worried per say, just not sure if this is a regular cat thing or something of a (?) traumatic past experience, if that’s possible? in any sense, does anyone have kitties with negatively responsive trigger sounds? i’d love to hear about any personal experience!
tl;dr - my 3.5 y/o cat has always been skittish as she was a urban stray for the first year of her life, but has since been showered with love and patience and has really come out of her shell. however, she mysteriously hates the sound of coughs and sneezes and i wonder why- do all cats just dislike certain noises? thanks in advance for any responses:)
