We've just got a new cat and we've been doing our best to cat proof the place. One stumbling block is the exact placement of the litter box. Our house is a a 4 level side split. (Think of it like 4 half floors) We obviously don't want the litter box in the living room or kitchen, and most guides say to keep it out of high traffic areas. Our bathrooms don't really have the floor space.
The best place as far as humans are concerned, is the unfinished basement, but I'm concerned the cat won't be willing to make the trip all the way down there. We've tried bringing him to the box and he seems to be ok with the basement in general. It's warm and dry and I've got a night light to keep it lit up. We've done a sweep and removed anything hazardous from the area. We spent most of the evening playing with him in the basement and he used the litter when he was already down there. But we;ve also had an accident when we were on a different floor. Is this a feasible plan, or should I bite the bullet, and accept the litter needs to be in a more accessible location?
Finally is it ok to confine him to one room during times no one can keep and eye on him, until he's better trained? I feel guilty locking him up, but I also don't want to come home to a trashed house. He's a real climber and he's not shy about clawing his way up to anything he can't reach by jumping.
