I know the law varies by city and state, but in many cities if you house an animal on your property you are legally responsible for it. I understand the purpose of these laws, so people can’t just say “it’s not my animal” when cruelty is discovered, it forces a point of ownership to the property owner if nothing else.
Now here is the issue. If you encounter a stray that seems injured or ill, and you take it in to care for it, and it’s injuries turn out to require professional medical intervention you cannot afford, then in many places that puts you in the position of now being guilty of cruelty and neglect for having tried to help an animal but not being able to afford to do so fully.
So here is my question, and responses from people with actual experience in the relevant fields are preferable, but is it sound advice to always ignore strays unless you are confident you can afford to address in short order whatever medical needs they have. Basically always ignore sick or injured strays unless you happen to have $500 or so on hand just in case it turns out they need an operation or something.
