I don’t know if this is the right place to come, but I’m in desperate need of help. My green cheek conure, Elvis, has been my loyal and loving companion since I was 8 years old (the past 12 years). He and I would do everything together and he has always been my best buddy. He was always very loving and affectionate towards me.
About a month and a half ago my long distance boyfriend came to visit and met Elvis. He loves birds and wanted to become friends with him, but immediately Elvis would fly away from him whenever he came close. He seemed terrified of my boyfriend, which was very strange because he has never acted afraid of a person before. He is very social and will often let strangers hold him and cuddle him.
Elvis has also met boyfriends of mine in the past and hasn’t acted this way. He would get jealous and bite them, but was never afraid. As soon as my boyfriend flew home, Elvis began acting terrified of me as well. At first I was worried he was sick, but his poop and eating habits have all been normal. He gets check ups every six months and has regularly been in perfect health. He is still acting normal towards my family and friends who have known him. It’s only me who he appears afraid of.
I’ve tried everything I can think of. I talk to him for hours while I’m working in the kitchen (where his main cage is) in an attempt to re-familiarize. I’ve tried offering treats. I’ve tried different ways of approaching him. I’m heart broken and at a loss of what to do.
What makes this situation even worse is that I’m supposed to be moving to another state away from my family in one week. I was planning on leaving Elvis home anyways for the first couple months because I was worried the move would be too stressful on him. But at this rate I don’t know if he’ll ever be able to come with me. Do I really have to say goodbye to my dearest little buddy like this?
Please any help or advice at all is appreciated!! I really don’t know what to do. I’ve tried scouring the internet and my bird books for answers but haven’t been able to find anything conclusive. If any bird owners have experienced or heard of anything like this happening please let me know!!
TL;DR: My beloved green cheek conure is suddenly terrified of me after 12 years of companionship.
