My roommate and I adopted a couple of cats and not long after one of them ran away. We looked for her for months before coming to the conclusion that she wasn’t coming back.
We noticed about two months after the cat ran away, the one that didn’t run away (Pix) was really lonely so we decided to adopt a new cat (Mishe). The shelter said he liked other cats and Pix was used to having another cat around. We fell in love with him instantly but she hated him.
We spent 4 months keeping litter boxes in both our bedrooms (which smelled RANK since these were the summer months) and keeping only one cat out at a time while the other was in a bedroom. Every few days we’d switch the litter boxes, the food and water bowls, and the cats, so they each spent time in both bedrooms. We got to the point where they could both be out for a few hours before we had to put one of them back in a bedroom. We were finally able to keep them both out very recently and life got a lot easier.
On Tuesday the vet found conjunctivitis in both of Pix’s eyes and gave us eyedrops to give her. My roommate had noticed her eyes seemed to be bothering her a few days beforehand.
The last few weeks have been bad. Pix almost never comes out from under my bed and when she does it’s to eat or cuddle, but she hardly eats anything and as soon as she sees Mishe in the doorway she’ll stop cuddling and hide under my bed.
Last week Pix peed on my bed (which was my bad because the door was closed; she’s the type to scratch at it if she needs out and Mishe was bothering her) and I was up until 3 AM cleaning it up
She also took a dump in her carrier on the way home from the vet which I was little worried about happening since she’d be without a litter box in the car and at the vet.
Today I walked into my room and there was (still wet) cat pee all over some of my clothes. The door was open this time. I shut both cats out and threw my clothes into the washer.
As I started typing this Pix wandered downstairs and Mishe started chasing her back upstairs and under my roommates bed. I put a litter box and water in my room and Mishe is currently in there on time out.
They’re both such good cats and we love them so much. Even during some of the worst days of the summer with litter boxes in our bedrooms and a broken AC I couldn’t imagine giving one of them up. Pix is such a gentle and loving soul and Mishe is such a playful boy. They both love to cuddle and be with us. We love them and they love us but Pix hates Mishe. We also firmly believe that giving up pets is like abandoning a child- when you commit to a pet you have to commit to it for its life.
I don’t know what to do. It’s been six months since we brought Mishe home and I’m out of ideas to help them adapt to each other.
