How to tell if pet had pass away?

It's been rough for the family, but our 11 year old cat had past away a few weeks ago.

I was not present when she had died and was informed a few hours after the discovery that her chest wasn't exhaling. She wasn't moving (stiff and cold) and was not responding to calls for a whole hour. Vets were closed over the weekend which made things very difficult.

I would like to know what are signs to check to tell if the cat had deceased and not something like being in shock?

If the chest is not moving after an hour, is that a clear sign of deceased? I've read that after 10 minutes of no oxygen it's unlikely to recover. Also, I read up that if the pet is deceased, the eyes would be open? I would like a list of this just so I can learn and understand.

Backstory: Her stomach was swollen. It started about a month ago when only her right side felt enlarged. However, it went down after a week. She wasn't showing any signs of illness. Sadly, all of a sudden her entire stomach got big on Friday night and wasn't eating much at all the next day with mucus coming out her nose/mouth and yellow stains on the diaper in her bed. The following day is when she was found not responding.
