I don't know what is wrong with my cat.

I have a two year old cat, Morty. He's my second cat and I didn't mean to get him-- my abusive ex randomly broughth him to me to raise when he was two weeks. I love this cat, he can be the sweetest little guy out there but then he flips and becomes SUPER aggressive. I think it's because of my ex, I'm not sure. Before I left (and one of the contributing factors of me leaving) I caught him hitting Morty, who was only like two months at the time. I got him off of Morty and took the brunt of it, but there's no tell what I didn't catch. I've tried to play with him more to help with his energy but he hates all toys, he wants to go outside (which I can't do in the neighborhood I'm in, but I'm working to find a place that would allow him to be outside) and I think this would help him with his excess energy and aggressiveness. A lot of people in my life don't like this cat, but I love him. We have a bond-- I guess that happens when you teach a cat how to poop lol. But he'll randomly attack people and now he's started kicking himself in the face until he cries out in pain. I tried to get him to stop and he got defensive/scared and hissed and swiped at me. I just don't know what to do. There's nothing physically wrong, I took him to the vet in August and he was fine. Help?
