Introducing cat to crazy dog

I had to move back home with my parents from my apartment because I couldn't get work. I have a cat, he's 14 (but acts and looks more like 7), his name is Bear, and he's very sweet, generally submissive to other animals, very gentle, and gets along with everyone and everything. However, my parents have a crazy Boston terrier/jack russell mix named Walter which they took off my sister's hands when he became too much for their kids.

When Walter was living with my sister he would chase her cat and bark at it. He never tried to hurt the cat or anything like that, it seemed like he was more excited than anything. But when Walter was living with my sister, he was a totally different dog. He had really bad behavioural problems, there were 3 energetic, loud, crazy kids always touching him and disrupting him, and he even had to wear a really tight, uncomfortable looking shock collar.

Now that Walter lives in my parent's calm house, he is much more relaxed and most of his behavioural problems disappeared. He still has behavioural issues but they're mostly just him eating garbage and not really listening to certain commands. He's still very dominant though.

When I brought Bear inside and upstairs in his carrier, Walter was very interested in sniffing him and seemed very perky. When I put Bear in the bathroom while I was getting my bedroom ready for him, Walter sniffed excitedly at the bathroom door but didn't bark or growl and when I told him to go away, he did.

I think it's worth a shot to try to introduce them. Even if they don't love each other maybe they can coexist. My backup plan is to try to keep Bear upstairs and keep Walter downstairs. We bought a baby gate to separate the two spaces.

Anyway I'm just wondering if anyone has some tips or advice for me. Bear has been here 1 day and I've kept him in my room - the two animals haven't seen each other yet.
