My cat thinks my face is the scratching post

I adopted a 2.5 year old shelter cat 2.5 months ago from a humane society and it was great. She would follow me around the house, watch me cook, is playful, etc (basically like a normal cat).

A few weeks in she began a sort of jump attack. They would come without warning and she would jump to about mid-section high on me and sink her claws in. As annoying and painful as it could be I attempted to write it off as a “cat loves me” issue.

Come to the past few weeks, my cat has been attacking my face with no provocation. The attacks tend to come in the evening, and usually it’s when I’m watching TV when she will come over to be pet. She gives no warning signs of a looming attack and is generally purring and calm right before. Her attacks are bad. I bleed quite a bit and my face looks like I’ve been fighting a cat....

I play with her before and after work, pet her whenever I can (when she wants it), have given her a wide variety of toys and cat perches throughout my home to keep her happy and safe. She had a checkup post adoption and was in great health.

I’m reaching out to see if there have been any other members with the same issues. I love this cat and she’s a doll 90% of the time, but I can’t take many more attacks. I’ve reached out to the shelter for help, but no matter which methods I try the attacks continue. I’ve been considering taking her to a no-kill shelter (there’s quite a few good ones in Chicago where I live) as she might need a playmate or possibly someone who can give her attention throughout the day.

Sorry for my never ending post, I appreciate any and all input!
