My cats never get tired of playing because I'm doing the playing for them.

I have two 1.5 yr old cats, a brother and sister. As they grew up I could rarely find a toy that caught their interest, and they didn't play with many toys I bought -- they mostly just played with each other. Until one day, when I found the thing that would change our lives forever: a laser pointer.

They were OBSESSED. They would chase it around endlessly. It was their favorite thing to do, and they would get so tired afterward. I really felt like I was doing a good thing for my cats through daily exercise and mental stimulation.

However, their interest in the laser pointer has changed. They're still obsessed with it, but not because they chase it. They only like it now because they like to watch me move it around. They don't want to run anymore. They'lll go for a lap or two, sure, but never to the point where they're actually tired. They just get lazy and sit and watch me. It lasts forever because they never get tuckered out. Sitting is easy, and running sucks. Then I realized:

I had created Cat Television.

The minute I stop playing with the laser, they cry. The whining lasts forever. Literal hours. And for the past week or so, this has escalated to the point where one cat has woken me up consistently at 3am each night because she wants to play. Or, rather, she wants ME to play, and she just wants something to look at for 20 minutes.

On the one hand, I'm impressed by my cats' level of intellect and I understand that they clearly require more mental stimulation than what I'm giving. But on the other hand, they don't want to play with any toys that physically tire them. They just want the laser. My cats are freaky laser worshipping cultists.

Is there anything I can do to give my cats more things to do? Or a toy that won't turn them into 24/7 meowing maniacs?
