TLDR: dog got attacked, going to be ok, need advice on how to track down the owner/dog responsible in our apartment complex.
Last week my dog was attacked by another dog in our apartment complex while out on a walk with my girlfriend. The attack was unprovoked, the dog got free of the owner who was busy looking at her phone and made a beeline for mine. The attacking dog, which was a pitbull, latched on to my dogs side and refused to let go. I heard the screaming and yelling from our living room and bolted outside to find my girlfriend trying to pull our dog away while the other owner lazily pulling hers. I jumped on top of the dog, tried prying his mouth open with anything we could find. When that didn’t work I resorted to punching it multiple times in the head, nothing phased it. A bunch of neighbors had joined in at this point, some trying to help get the pit to let go, others just spectating, as people do these days. After about 3-5 minutes the pit finally let go. We grabbed towels, car keys, etc and ran out in a hurry because the only emergency vet open was 30 minutes away, in doing so, we failed to get the owners info, who fled the scene while we attended to our dog. Our dog is expected to make a full recovery, we were lucky that the pit only got her skin and no muscles or organs.
It’s been a week, we’ve posted flyers, talked to the police and animal control, reported it to our apartment management but aside from a few people responding to our flyers saying they’ve seen the pit/owner in question around but don’t know which apartment they are in, we don’t really have much to go on. Is there anything else we can be doing? Are we to the point where we knock on every door until maybe we find them? Do we light a fire under management’s ass to do the knocking for us? We’re trying to stay patient but it’s tough when we know for certain it’s someone in our community who is too much of a coward to own up to their mistake.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
