I recently got a cavoodle puppy and adopted a kitten with a week of one another (kitten had 5 days as an “only child” before we brought pup home). They are the same age - 11 weeks - and roughly the same size, although kitten is skinnier than the pup.
They have adjusted to each other really well - sleeping nearby each other, neither is scared of the other at all, and kitten has tried to groom and clean puppy when they’re both relaxed - but they play fight A LOT, and I am concerned they go too far and won’t “grow out of it” as the puppy grows into a larger animal and can do more damage to the cat (and vice versa).
They both seem to really enjoy themselves, with each of them often instigating the play with the other one, and coming back for more. Occasionally though there have been little yelps (usually from puppy - where the kitten has clawed or bitten him too hard), at which point I separate them and do a “time out” where pup goes in his play pen for awhile to keep them separate.
There’s nothing massively for concern yet - but I do worry at the escalation of their play sometimes (it just looks SO rough?!) and how this will play out as they grow older, especially as neither of them seems to take a submissive stance yet, which means one never breaks away or concedes defeat. They’re both equally as stubborn and alpha as the other.
I’m hoping they don’t fight like this when they are adults as it’s stressful enough supervising them while they’re babies! Does anyone have tips on how to best manage this, or experience in a similar situation?
Any advice would be appreciated!
