Retrain my cat to use the litter box?

Hey everyone,

Long story short, my one year old kitty came down with urinary crystals a short time ago and stopped using his litter box. I changed his food, etc.

The current situation: My kitty taught himself to urinate in the toilet. He'll defecate in his litter and that's it. I don't know if this is permanent. I have to close off access to the couch and my bed every day because he peed on them before.

My vet said to get a multilevel cat crate to retrain him to use the litter box. I don't know how long I should do this or if there are better methods.

I'm going away for 3 weeks and my sister is going to watch my kitty at her place. I was initially thinking it might be a great idea to introduce the crate there because two other cats live in her apartment. I'm hoping he can also socialize with them a bit as he didn't grow up with other cats.

This situation has many facets to it and I feel a little confused as to what would be best. I would really appreciate some advice! Thank you!
