I have a two and a half year old golden retriever and another smaller dog. I know that my dog can be aggressive with other dogs that he doesn't know. Especially large brown or black dogs. I think this is because when he was little we had a run-in with a bear. so I always make sure that they meet each other through a fence first. once they're sniffing and everybody is showing the correct behavior then I allow them to play together. This works 100% of the time and they all play just fine. Today I was at the dog park and there was nobody there. I was talking to a lady who was in the small dog park.
A guy came in with the big black mastiff. Probably the biggest dog and my dog has ever seen. but by the time I noticed him he was already inside the dog park. I ran over there immediately because I knew what was about to happen. my dog started growling at the other dog who was very submissive. luckily because he's a golden retriever he doesn't really bite. Golden retrievers can't bite very hard because they're bird hunting dogs. but obviously the owner was really pissed off. Kicked at my dog. I apologized and told him I didn't see him come in.
Neutering a golden is a little bit different than other dogs. If you neuter young golden it drastically increases their cancer rates. And if you neuter an adult golden then their death rates don't change. There have been several studies on this done by Berkeley and other institutions. I'm terrified that if I neuter my golden his demeanor will change. I don't want him to become less playful or less energetic or just any different than he already is. I love my dog and 99.9% of the time I'm able to avoid these cases. I'm just upset and don't know what to do.
