Young cat attacking senior cat. Help!

My sweet 15 year old cat recently came back to live with me after having been re-homed with family for a period when I couldn’t have him. We also have a 3 year old cat who is very energetic and aggressive. He often attacks and bites my son, even when my son is in bed asleep. He hides under beds and will scratch/bite feet really hard if we stand there.

The younger one started chasing the older one. Obviously the older one is much slower and doesn’t want to play. Now it’s beyond chasing, He’s full blown attacking; biting, pinning down, etc. The older one usually cries out in pain and if we’re nearby and react to it, the younger one will run away. The older one, although much bigger, is very docile and not a fighter, so he doesn’t defend himself. I have a Feliway diffuser but it doesn’t appear to be working.

I can’t take it anymore, and really can’t take the thought that my sweet cat’s remaining time on earth is being spent with him being attacked and constantly being fearful. Frankly, we would give up the younger one, but my son won’t have it.

Any advice is appreciated!
