How to move across country with a cat; fly? Drive?

I'm moving a 26 hour drive/4 hour flight away within the US. We're considering driving because it would allow us to bring more stuff and the people helping me are looking forward to a road trip. The biggest question mark in that idea is how to get my cat there. I've never flown with a pet before so, while I know people do it, I'm not really sure how they do it and how it would compare to driving.

Has anyone ever driven this distance with a cat? Where did you stow the cat while the vehicle was moving? How did you let it use the litterbox? Where did you stay the night? Overall, would you recommend it?

Those who have taken a cat on a plane, same questions minus the stay the night part.

Any advice appreciated! <3
