A little back story, I used to have an epileptic cat. He died at the age of 11 months around 3 weeks ago and we were all heartbroken in the family. He got very sick at the end and it was painful watching him have 2 to 3 seizures a day even though I tried everything and went to 3 different vets.
He used to pee everywhere and he would get dirty, we would clean him and the floor sometimes up to 4 times a day. Needless to say, the experience was all around traumatising.
I have been feeding stray cats recently to cope with the pain, and one of the kitties is super friendly. I can tell he was a house cat and has been dumped and I really want to take him in. He is really dirty and seems like he has infections that could be treated by meds and daily care.
The issue is that, due to my previous cat's illness my mom and dad, even though they love cats and would feed strays also, are refusing completely to adopt another one, specially that this one might also have problems since he's an adult stray cat.
I am planning to immigrate in a year or two, and this is the most worrisome part. I don't want to get him and then leave them stuck with him maybe for a year or so until I get settled and then I will take him with me.
To be honest, I am also terrified of any illnesses the cat might have due to our previous experience but I really want to give him a better life. He seems depressed and has a sad look in his eyes.
I considered taking him to the vet for a bath and a check up and then putting him up for adoption and keeping him at the house till he gets adopted. But he's an adult cat and not a rare breed most superficial people are into getting and there is a real chance none will take him. I will definitely not put him out in the streets again in this case.
I don't know if I am being too selfish by bringing in a cat that might have problems again, but I feel so bad all the time thinking he is alone in the streets.
Basically I am just looking for advice on what could be the best course of action, and if someone was in this situation before.
