Left my cat with my sister when I went abroad; he pees on stuff when she leaves him in our room unattended and now she wants to buy him pee pads but I’m worried he might start to become unfamiliar with using litter. Any advice on the situation?

My cat’s been with my sister for a month now since I had to leave again now that classes are offline. I absolutely intend on getting back home to take him with me wherever I find new work after I graduate in August. In the meantime, he’s staying with my sister in our place.

The problem is he enjoys staying in our bedroom throughout the day and our litter boxes are in our bathroom, which stays closed throughout the day. He also doesn’t really indicate when he wants to use the litter box. Because of this, my sister has no idea when he wants to needs to use the litter box and he ends up peeing on other stuff, like a blanket or pillows or even his own pet bed.

She wants to try using pee pads, but I’m worried that, given how often he’s in our bedroom, he’ll get used to using the pads and become unfamiliar with using litter. But I also feel awful that I’m not there to clean up after him. Would it be better to give her option a try? Or are there other suggestions to help fix the situation?
