Not sure what to do anymore involving a pet mouse

My now ex wife bought me a little young male brown mouse back in November for my birthday. I've had many mice as pets throughout my life and have never had anything but amazing experiences and relationships with them.

Until this one. I named him Pablo on a whim and man, he unfortunately suits the name well because he's like a spastic little coke head with a temper.

I've tried everything I've always done in the past and have tried techniques I've read about before and this dude will just not calm down and become tame. I've tried to hold him daily I've tried to pet him and leave him in his cage I've tried just setting my hand in the cage for a bit and not mess with him and let him get used to my smell. Nothing works. He spends the entire time biting me so hard it brings pouring blood, or trying to use my hand/wrist/forearm as a ladder for him to escape.

He moves the way a wild mouse does. With extremely quick spastic moves and jumps. He does literally nothing but try to escape every cage I put him in no matter the size or make. To the point where he now will start getting his head stuck in between bars a little because I now have to keep him in a glass walled area with an open top, with a bigger caged bar walls set over that, with a very thick magazine set on top of that so he won't escape or hurt himself.

When I need to temporarily relocate him to his ball to clean the cage he is so fast and MEAN that I have no choice but to pick him up by his tail (which I HATE doing to mice).

I don't know WHAT to do and I don't understand why he won't calm down and tame some. I've never had it take more than about a week (and that's for what I used to call a stubborn mouse) to warm up to me, and I've never had one be so spastic and jumpy just like a wild mouse. He's bitten me and jumped down onto the floor three times now and I can't risk losing him like that so holding him by the tail is a must now when removing him from his cage.

I feel like a mouse-papa failure for the first time. Idk what to do with or for him. Any suggestions? Would I be an absolute piece of shit if I took him back to the pet store and returned or exchanged him if I explained the situation?

To make matters even worse in my small apartment he has been banished to the shelf in my bedroom closet because he never does anything but pull himself up to the cage bars laying on top of the cage and spending HOURS ALL night long trying to chew on the bars and keeping me awake. Whereas my other pet nice were normal and would sleep or at worst just eat some seeds or play around in their bedding and chew on their wood blocks and stuff.

Wtf is wrong with this dude? I feel like I was sold a legitimate wild mouse!
