Taking care of in-law's dog while they're on vacation when I have a resident cat

Please note that all of the events mention will be happening in the future (i.e. 2022 and beyond)

My husband and I are finally moving to a place that allows pets and I am going to live my dream and get a cat. We will be picking up our cat from his foster home once he is 12 weeks old. The foster home has a large dog so the cats are used to her, and play with her (supervised).

My in-laws have a 9yo Cavapoo and, if I am being honest, I do not think she is socialized properly (terrified of large dogs, barks at everything out the window, loves people more than other animals). However, she is decently obedient.

My in-laws usually leave her with their parents to babysit in case they need to go somewhere for an extended period of time (dinner with friends or vacationing), but since the place we are moving to is closer to them, they want to drop the dog off with us instead. If they are out with friends it will usually just be for a few hours but they usually vacation for 1-2 weeks (obviously this will only happen when Corona is "over").

Every page I have read on dogs and cats always mentions to isolate the new pet in a small room while the existing pet roams as per usual, slowly getting them familiar with their scents, etc. before releasing both of them into the main house. However, I'm not sure how to handle a "temporary" guest. I would feel guilty tossing a 9 yo dog who wants nothing but to love my husband and I into a small room, however I have no idea how she will react to our future cat.

Luckily my in-laws are willing to do whatever it takes to smooth the transition, I have read things about bringing a damp facecloth with the scent of the other to sniff in exchange for treats but I'm just asking if there is anything I can do to make this as stress-less as possible. I will be a new cat mum (new pet mum) and want to do as much research as possible.

Thank you all in advance
