Advice for prospecting first-time pet owners.

Hi all! My girlfriend and I are considering getting our first pet. In a dream world, we would get a small dog that is easy to travel with, even-tempered, and good with cats.

We both want a dog VERY badly, but we have differing opinions on when we should get one.

She believes that we're ready for one.

This would be our first ever pet, and a dog is a very big commitment. I think it would be wiser to wait, maybe get a less-high maintenance pet, and see how responsible we are before committing to getting a dog.

I would just like to know how others came to the decision to get their first pet. It's scary, taking in something that's dependent on you for survival.

What factors did you have to weigh to help you decide? What about getting the pet was more challenging or easy than you expected?

And finally, what would some advice be for a first-time pet owning couple? How can we prepare?

If we do decide to get one, I would like to make its home life the best it can possibly be.
