First time cat owners... better off adopting a kitten or cat?

My S.O. and I currently live in an apartment with our 7 year old coonhound. He’s the laziest boy and loves snuggling, napping & going to the park multiple times a day. He’s had a long history of homes so he’s been around dogs and cats all his life.

My S.O. and I always have wanted a cat but due to our upbringings, we’ve always only had dogs. Dogs are #1 in my heart but I do love cats as well. However, we will be first time cat owners and want to ensure we do all the right things to give him or her a long happy life!

Our apartment is very chill & low key. We have 3 long days (9-5), 2 half days and home almost every single weekend. We are ready to adopt a cat and have them join our pack.

We’ve been visiting some shelters and looking online all over at several cats. We don’t really care about the age- we’d be willing to adopt a kitten or we’d be willing to adopt an adult or senior. Obviously I’d want to make sure my dog and the cat get along so I’m wondering if shelters or rescue groups would do “meet and greets” with our dog and the potential cat? Also, based on your experience & knowledge, would you recommend us adopting a kitten, or a full grown adult or senior?

If you need any more information from me or if I left out any crucial identifying details, please ask! Thank you!

TL;DR- First time cat owners. Lowkey environment. 3 long days during the week, 2 half days, 2 days off. Better suited for an adult or kitten? (or up to our discretion)
