So I'm from America but I work and live abroad (or I will be again starting in July) and I miss having a pet desperately. I've had both cats and dogs, cats for longer but I still lived with a family dog for 6+ years who I loved and helped take care of, and don't have a strong preference between the two. Going forward I would really like to have a pet, logistics permitting, but I am trying to figure out which would suit my lifestyle better. Of course, there's a lot of other factors that will influence not only that but if I'll be able to have a pet at all like which country I'll be in (likely China, potentially South Korea) and the laws there, if I'll be in a city or the countryside (aiming for a city, but nothing solidified), what apartments/houses will be available to me, etc. But the main two factors I was weighing are how stressed out an animal would be with international travel and how much I'll actually be home. I wouldn't have to fly with my pet that often; once to get there and then there's the potential to move annual when my contract ends, but flying can be really stressful for pets. I was leaning towards a cat being a better option solely because I'll be gone more or less M-F 8-4 and that would be a long time for a pup, but would a cat be exponentially more stressed with flying internationally? If it was something I only had to do with my pet once it wouldn't be as much of a consideration, but I know it'll more likely be once a year or once every two years. If I get a younger cat and work with them being in a carrier early on would that negate that enough? If anyone has any insight that'd be very appreciated. Thanks in advance!
